Before you roll your eyes and exit the page, you might just want to hear this. Exercising may seem like the last thing you want to do while on your period, but it has surprisingly positive benefits you’ll want to reap. Some of these include less cramps, a happier you and an increase in strength. Can I get an AMEN!
It’s always important to know your body though, so if you truly don’t feel like lifting a finger, you’re damn well entitled to it! But on the up chance exercising doesn’t sound half bad, here are a few benefits of staying active and exercising on your period.
Exercising helps with cramps
This is probably the most convincing reason to start hitting the gym instead of being a couch potato during your flow (we don't blame you though). Getting your heart pumping gets the blood moving throughout the body which leads to an increase in blood circulation. This increase in blood circulation helps to lower the intensity of cramps. Another bonus is the release of those feel good chemicals in the brain, endorphins! Endorphins are naturally produced by the body and act as a painkiller.
Mood and energy booster
While the endorphins in your brain are helping to kick the pain in your abdomen, they’re also around to help boost your mood! The influx of hormones during your cycle can make some days feel a little dull and grey. Hitting the gym, taking a Pilates class or doing whatever you like to get moving, can help give you a little more pep in your step.
Helps with fatigue
The same hormones that have you feeling a little more down and dreary can also make you a bit more sluggish. But even when the thought of working out on your period makes you tired, it can actually do just the opposite. Consistent exercise can help balance hormones and get you out of that fog. Some have even reported that exercising helped clear a menstrual block and got things flowing again! So if things ever get a little late, try giving a good exercise a whirl! A lot of these cases have been anecdotal, research is still being done on these fronts.
Periods give you power
At MIA, we’re all about giving power to the period. Turns out this can also be taken quite literally! According to a study done at Umeå University in Sweden, women who practiced resistance training during the first two weeks of their cycle saw an increase in performance compared to this same style of training on the last two weeks of their cycles. The same women also noticed an increase of lean body mass during the same two weeks. Talk about period power!
